Rounders

A movie that could be retitled “Beating John Malkovich,” “Rounders” pits law student-come-gambler Matt Damon against nemesis Malkovich in a high stakes game of Texas Hold ‘Em.  Malkovich’s Oreo-munching Russian proves a formidable foe, but not an unbeatable one.

The Sting

With his twinkling sky-blue eyes, Paul Newman always looks like he’s scamming someone.  “The Sting” is one big rip-off triggered by one hot game of poker…

Casino

One of the most exciting sequences in a gambling film is the “Eye in the Sky” scene in “Casino.”  Explaining the chain of command at a Vegas Casino, Robert DeNiro’s narration showcases the scrupulous vigilance of the gambling industry.

Casino Royale

The card-playing scenes in “Casino Royale” are most notable for one thing:  the villain’s bleeding eye.  Studio bosses obviously knew it was a selling point as they put it in the trailer.

Based on a true story, MIT math geniuses count blackjack at the prodding of Professor Kevin Spacey.  When main character Jim Sturgess wants to back out, however, Spacey isn’t very understanding.

Maverick

Jodie Foster’s grifter meets Mel Gibson’s gambler in the movie remake of the Wild West TV show “Maverick” and hilarity ensues.  In this little gem, Gibson pulls in a big hand to the disdain of one of his fellow gamblers, but the complainant gets more than he bargained for.

Rain Man

Who doesn’t remember the moment Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman descend the escalator in matching suits?  And that’s before the gambling even starts.  Cruise makes a killing at the table thanks to Hoffman’s autistic savance.  Queens?  “There’s lots of ‘em.”

While the gaming floor will be open to all guests 24 hours a day, there are some amenities that will be unavailable for short periods.  If you’re a night owl, the bullets below are just for you.

• Club Clearwater will be closed 5-7am each day
• Agate Pass Deli will always be open, but grill items will be unavailable 4-6am Mondays & Fridays

Guest favorites, including Raven Gifts and our welcoming Transportation Department will also be keeping their current schedules.  The popular Ferry Shuttle to Bainbridge Island will continue to meet every boat each day after 9am, and will provide service until the last boat of the evening each night.

Dollison’s charm is a giant mechanical mouse with blinking eyes.  Sometimes she allows this robo-rodent to roam the table.  No annoyance there for her fellow players…

Sami Farha 

In one of the weirder examples, 2003 WSOP second place finisher Farha dangles an unlit cigarette from his mouth while watching his chips pile.  If he’s losing, he’ll change the cigarette.  What makes this weird?  Farha doesn’t smoke.

Peter Muller 

Morgan Stanley’s king of quantitative analysis, Muller used to bring his dog along to his poker tournaments.  The Princeton grad’s canine seemed to help out in 1998 when Muller finished 4^th in the WSOP.

Phil Gordon 

While in his pursuit of some authentic WSOP hardware, Gordon’s kids gave him a “World’s Greatest Dad” bracelet to bring him luck.

Simon Trumper 

This English poker player uses a pair of gold and diamond aces to cap his cards and for good luck.  They must be working; Trumper has earned over $1 million playing poker.

John Giannos 

Giannos, the director of player development at the Golden Nugget, is a former baseball player who totes around a red envelope he received 20 years ago.

Johnny Chan 

Known as “The Orient Express”, pro champ Chan seems to believe in good luck via produce; he is often found calling next to an orange.  No word if he’s ever taken a bite…

Humberto Brenes 

World Poker Open champ Brenes often carries a small toy shark with him to the poker table, which he uses as both a card protector and good luck charm.  Due to his choice of token, Brenes is referred to as “The Shark.”  (Not a bad nickname in cards!)

Doyle Brunson 

In addition to once stating he thinks women are bad luck, the famed gambler Brunson employs a card protector with a Ghostbusters logo on it called “Casper.”  Casper has taken on some fame of his own, with other gamblers renting the black rock for 30 minute intervals at $200 a pop.

In addition to these personal good luck charms, there are a number of things considered good and bad luck in general.  (And not all of them are covered by Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler.”)

But despite the above, players should always remember that luck, even in your favorite Seattle casino, has its limits.
